To meet the need for convoy escort carriers Henry J. Kaiser proposed in mid-1942 to build 100 auxiliary carriers within a years time using the S4 naval hull. Fifty were eventually ordered.
The Casablanca Class were the first escort carriers designed from the keel up. They were easy to construct.
The flight deck was 500' / 152.4 m X 108' / 32.9 m. in size.
There were two lifts in the deck. A catapult was installed to help launch aircraft.
On each side of the flight deck were boiler uptakes.
