Design

The Savoia-Marchetti SM.89 was based on the SM.84 bomber.

Prototype

The SM.89 prototype was being evaluated when Italy surrendered.

Later prototypes were to have Piaggio P.XV R.C.35 (1,500 HP) engines mounted.
